Slovenia is the rare kind of place where you can take your family deep into a cave on an underground train in the morning and be tobogganing down a mountain by the afternoon. It is a country full of nature and high-energy activities for every member of the family, from hiking across alpine plateaus to swimming in lakes with surprisingly warm water.
This guide is built on our first hand experience road trip through Croatia and Slovenia, as well as a previous Interrail adventure. We have seen exactly how to handle the chaos of family travel here, where timing and logistics matter. Our Mini Guides distill these insights into a fluff-free itinerary of what to visit, where to stay, and exactly where to park
Slovenia Road Trip Essentials
- The Vignette: Unlike other countries in Europe, Slovenia doesn’t have traditional tolls and uses a vignette system. You can choose the duration (weekly/monthly), and rental cars usually have it included.
- Speed & Safety: Be aware that there are many speed cameras. Respect the road conditions and limits; it is a safe country, but they are strict on traffic rules.
- Parking: Most parking in popular locations is paid. You can usually pay with contactless cards or apps like EasyPark.
- Water Temperature: Mountain rivers are freezing (10°C), but the lakes are warm and perfect for long swims (24°C).
7 Days in Slovenia Road Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the perfect starting point. The center is entirely car-free, safe, and easy to navigate with kids.
Things you can’t miss in Ljubljana
- Ljubljana Castle & Funicular
- The Dragon Bridge
- The House of Illusions (optional)
- Tivoli Park Adventure Playground (optional)
Where to Park
- Parking Tivoli II: Outdoor lot, great for visiting the park and a 10-minute walk to the center.
- PH Kongresni trg: An underground garage right under the main square. (Our pick)
- Parking Castle: If you prefer to drive up to the castle rather than take the funicular.
Morning: The Castle & The Old Town

Park and walk into the center. To get the best view, take the funicular up to the Ljubljana Castle. If you are adventurous, we recommend taking the funicular up and then heading down on foot. The walk down through the narrow, winding paths takes about 15 minutes and leads you directly into the charming streets of the Old Town. Afterward, walk through the market to see the Dragon Bridge and the Triple Bridge.

Afternoon: The House of Illusions & Tivoli
Head to the House of Illusions. It’s interactive and a great 1-hour break from the summer heat. Finish the day at Tivoli Park; it has a massive playground where the kids can burn off energy while you enjoy the greenery.
End your day in Ljubljana.
Day 2: Velika Planina

- Cable Car to Velika Planina
- 8km Circular Hike through the Herdsmen’s Village
- Kamniška Bistrica Glacial Spring (Optional)
- Evening swim in Lake Bled
Where to Park
- Velika Planina Cable Car Station: The parking lot right next to the cable car station is free. We highly recommend arriving early, as it tends to fill up quickly during the summer months.

Morning: The Alpine Plateau The drive from Ljubljana to the Velika Planina cable car station takes approximately 45 minutes. Take the cable car and then the chairlift to reach the plateau.
The best way to explore the area is via an 8km circular hike. We strongly recommend bringing a packed lunch in your backpack. There is nothing like finding a quiet spot along the trail to have a picnic while surrounded by traditional wooden huts and grazing cows.

Afternoon: Heading to Bled

Once you take the cable car back down, you can make a quick (optional) stop at the source of the Kamniška Bistrica river, located a short walk from the parking lot. The water is a stunning crystal blue but stays at a brutal 8°C.
Since you will be staying in Bled, head straight there afterward. The drive from the cable car station to Bled takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. After the hike, there is nothing better than taking your first dip in the much warmer waters of Lake Bled.
Where to Stay in Bled
End your day in Bled. We opted to stay at Camping Bled to reduce costs, and we highly recommend it if you enjoy being right on the water. It is located at the quiet western end of the lake and is perfect for families. If camping is not for you, there are several hotels and guesthouses in the town. Whatever you choose, book well in advance for the summer months. Most importantly, ensure your accommodation includes dedicated parking, as finding a spot in Bled during peak season can be a challenge.
Day 3: Lake Bled

Things you can’t miss in Bled:
- Vintgar Gorge
- Lake Bled Village & 6km Loop Walk
- Straža Summer Toboggan (optional)
- Swim in Lake Bled
Morning: Vintgar Gorge
Arrive at the Vintgar LIP (Central Hub) by 9:00 AM. Since direct car access to the Gorge entrance is restricted, you must park here and take the free electric shuttle bus. Arriving by 9:00 AM ensures you beat the heavy midday crowds.
The walk through the gorge is 1.6 km of wooden boardwalks over the turquoise Radovna River. It is a one-way path that ends at the impressive Šum Waterfall.
The Return Hike:

Once you reach the end of the gorge, you cannot walk back the same way. You have to choose between two circular return trails to get back to the shuttle/hub:
The River of Trees Trail: This is the one we chose. It is a shorter (about 2.7 km) but steeper forest path that stays mostly in the shade. It’s perfect for a hot summer morning, though it does involve more stairs!
The King of Triglav Trail: A sunnier, slightly longer path (about 4.1 km) that passes by St. Catherine’s Church.
Important: You must book your time slot online weeks in advance. The trail is one-way, and the shuttle returns you to the parking hub after the forest trail exit.
Afternoon: Village, Toboggan & The Loop
Drive back to Lake Bled Village. Park at Parking Straža, which is perfectly located for the rest of the day. Start by exploring the village center for local shops and cafes.
Head up the chairlift at Straža Bled for the Summer Toboggan. It is a high-speed sled track with great views. Afterward, begin the 6km loop walk around Lake Bled. This flat, paved path takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Along the western side of the loop, near the rowing center, there are several spots to stop for a swim in the lake to cool off.
End your day in Bled
Day 4: Lake Bled & Lake Bohinj
- Bled Castle
- Boat to the Island Church
- Lake Bohinj & Savica Waterfall
Morning: Bled Castle & Church of the Mother of God

Start your day early at Bled Castle. Perched on a 130m cliff, this provides the absolute best panoramic views of the lake and the island. Exploring the courtyard and museum takes about 1.5 hours. Use the dedicated castle parking lot at the top. After the castle, head down to the shore to visit the Church on the Island. You can rent a rowboat or take a traditional Pletna boat. Once on the island, you can climb the 99 stone steps to the church and ring the wishing bell.

Afternoon: Lake Bohinj

Drive 30 minutes further into the Julian Alps to reach Lake Bohinj. This lake is much wilder and quieter than Bled. Start by driving to the very end of the lake to hike up to the Savica Waterfall (Parking Savica). It is a short but steep 20 minute climb up stone steps to see the emerald water dropping 78m into a limestone pool. Afterward, head back to the lakeshore near Ribčev Laz for a swim or to rent a canoe.
End your day in Bled.
Day 5: Vršič Pass – The High Alpine Loop
- Zelenci Nature Reserve
- Russian Chapel
- Poštarski dom Circular Hike
- The 50 Hairpins of Vršič

Morning: The Emerald Spring & The Climb Start your day by leaving Bled early. The drive from Bled to Zelenci takes approximately 45 minutes. Park at the designated lot near Podkoren and take the short, flat walk to the wooden boardwalks. The emerald lake and the mountain backdrop are most peaceful in the morning light.

After visiting the lake, head back toward Kranjska Gora to begin the mountain pass ascent. The drive from Zelenci to the Russian Chapel is about 15 minutes. You will find the chapel at Turn 8 of the Vršič Pass. This wooden church is a quiet, moving piece of history built by prisoners of war during WWI.
Afternoon: The Vršič Pass Loop Hike Continue the drive up to the very top of the pass. Once you reach the summit (1,611m), park your car for the Poštarski dom na Vršiču circular hike.

Pro Tip: Just like on Day 2, we strongly recommend that you pack a lunch for this day. While there are mountain huts like Poštarski dom where you can grab a drink, having your own food allows you to pick a scenic spot along the loop trail with a view of the limestone peaks and enjoy a picnic in the wild.
This loop is an excellent alternative to a technical summit climb. It takes you through high alpine terrain with massive views of the limestone walls of the Julian Alps. Along this trail, you will get the best view of the Heathen Maiden (Ajdovska deklica), the natural rock formation that looks like a giant face carved into the mountain.
The Descent: After the hike, finish the second half of the 50 hairpins. The road descends into the Trenta Valley, where the emerald Soča River first appears. The scenery as you drop into the valley is spectacular.
Stay: Bovec or Kobarid.
Day 6: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle
- Postojna Cave
- Predjama Castle
Morning: Postojna Cave

Leave the Soča Valley and head toward Postojna Cave. The drive from Bovec is about 120 km and takes nearly 2 hours, so an early start is key. The experience begins with a 3.7 kilometer train ride that takes you deep into the heart of the limestone world. Once inside, a guided walk leads you through massive halls filled with towering stalagmites and delicate “spaghetti” stalactites.
Important: You must book your tickets for Postojna Cave online in advance. Tours are scheduled for specific timeslots and sell out quickly during the peak season. Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.
Even in the peak of summer, the cave maintains a constant temperature of 10°C. You will need a jacket or a warm layer despite the heat outside. Before exiting, stop by the aquarium to see the olms, the mysterious aquatic salamanders.
Afternoon: Predjama Castle

Just a short 15 minute drive from the cave sits Predjama Castle. This medieval marvel is the largest cave castle in the world and looks like it was carved directly out of the rock. During the summer months, a convenient shuttle bus often runs between the cave and the castle. Explore the secret tunnels, the armory, and the living quarters while learning about the legend of Erazem of Predjama, the “Slovenian Robin Hood” who resisted a year long siege here. The views from the upper terraces looking out over the valley are spectacular for photos.
Day 7: Piran and Skocjan Caves
- Piran Old Town
- Tartini Square
- Skocjan Caves
- Reka River Underground Canyon
Morning: Piran

Drive to the coast to visit Piran, one of the most beautiful towns on the Adriatic. Since the town center is a car-free zone in the summer, park in the large garage at the entrance and use the free shuttle. Spend your morning at Tartini Square and exploring the narrow, Venetian style streets. For the best view of the red tiled roofs against the blue sea, walk up to the Church of St. George or the medieval town walls. The morning light is perfect for photos before the summer heat peaks.
Afternoon: Skocjan

Head back inland for about 30 minutes to reach the Skocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While Postojna is famous for its formations, Skocjan is known for its sheer scale. You will walk through one of the largest underground canyons in the world, crossing a bridge suspended 47 meters above the roaring Reka River.
Important: Just like Postojna, you should book your entry time in advance for the summer. The caves stay at a cool 12°C, which provides a refreshing escape from the coastal afternoon heat.
After the cave tour, take the funicular or the walking path back to the surface, enjoying the views of the massive collapse dolines.
Where to Sleep
If you want to stay by the sea, Piran offers beautiful boutique hotels in historic buildings. If you prefer to be closer to the caves and nature, look for a tourist farm in the nearby Karst region. For those with a morning flight the following day, driving back to Ljubljana is a convenient choice, as it is only about 45 minutes from the caves.
Final Thoughts for Your Slovenian Road Trip
Flexibility and Planning
The most important thing to remember is that Slovenia is a small country. You can reach almost any major destination within two hours from the center. Because the distances are manageable, the order of this itinerary is more or less interchangeable. If you find that the weather looks better for the coast on Day 3 but is perfect for the mountains on Day 2, do not hesitate to swap your route.
Prioritize the Mountains

Slovenian mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. You should actively monitor the forecast and prioritize good weather days for the following locations:
- Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge: Clear skies make the water colors truly pop and the viewpoints much safer.
- Vršič Pass: Driving the 50 hairpin turns is significantly more enjoyable (and safer) when visibility is high and the peaks are not hidden in clouds.
- Velika Planina: These locations rely on natural light to showcase their beauty, and mountain trails should only be attempted when the forecast is stable.
